overall a hard to find oddball with lots of character and a great stance. I am sure i paid a tad too much for it, but the seller held it one day extra for me. Thats a rare thing for a craigs list seller to do so i was happy to kick him a little extra.
I bought this bike to help me break out of my Evil black bike phase. I need to use some color. I am thinking lots of metal flake. Also i wanted a bike that i could ride on some of the longer rides. The thinner tires will glide a lot nicer than the fat tires i have been rolling.

They are on issue 6 so help them out because they have a good coffee table magazine here. These pics are from their Facebook page. Got to start somewhere part 4

Well it all went down last night. It was time to weld so here is what i did. I welded together the rear triangle so i had a solid base when i do the top tube and down tube. My teacher suggested that i use 1/16th wire from the mig welder and Tig weld it. God damn that shit is small. So just to show me how it supposed to look He did the top of the seat stays for me.

And now my Crappy welds on the rear dropouts. The dropouts were just pressed in so i finished them off.

The Filler rod was almost too small and seamed to just disappear almost instantly.

The paint stunk to when it got hot. i really need to remove more of it.

After a few He suggested that i take off my safety glasses so i didnt refract what i was seeing any more.

after that i was able to see what i was doing a little better. I am not sure about the rod size, but i can't argue with his results.

This is where things got ugly. The bottom bracket was one of the worlds cheapest ones, a split one. I should have clamped it together and welded the seam first then put the legs in. I put the legs in first which was a big mistake because i couldnt close the gap. Teach said i should be able to close the gap and if not i would learn by blowing a hole in it like i did. He is a very go ahead and do it so you can see what happens type of teacher. Lesson learned.

I also had trouble with going around the curves. He said 1/4-1/2" at a time if you can so you dont get out of joint. In this pic i kind of get it minus the giant hole.

All in all it was ok for my first time Tig welding old bike Tubing. Not the worst thing i have ever seen in the custom bike world, but i got a long way to go. I wanted a muscle bike to chase the kids around with for some time now. The Dahon folder wasnt cutting it and i didnt need a Bike Snob NY moment. Not him making fun of me, but the moment he was photographed oh his Trek hybrid...get the picture.
I picked up this Sears built Free Spirit Muscle bike frame and Rat Trap fork for less than $100 shipped to me.

I had these Acs Z-mags laying around with vintage tractor thread tires.

This chain ring and cranks was on a junk frame i cut up today.

You know i am a sucker for suspension.

These Murray ram horn handle bars just didnt fit any other projects. Stay tuned for some Mike Giant tape.
I love this SE Quadangle-esc frame which was a selling point. Originally i wanted to build a 20" Quadangle, but this used up more parts for me. Now to find the perfect banana seat.

I got the sandblaster up and running and blasted off some hard to get paint.

without that blaster i dont think i would have ever been able to clean out this without chemicals.

Git into the hard to reach places so i can lay a finish weld down on.

We are at the point where the Teacher said bring in your projects to work on. So i have been working full time on this little frame. That explains why there were some days where i didnt post.
I read a post from Walt of Walt Works Cycles. He said you should be able to build a frame with as little tools as possible. He suggested hand mitering the tubing for several reasons. One was cost of a mitering set up for the small builder and the other was the ability to have a precision fit. So since i am just starting out chopping and re-welding and i dont really know what the heck i am doing i thought it was best i cut my teeth mitering tubing by hand. I think my first attempt at this turned out pretty good for not knowing all that much about it.
Here it is put back together. it is painfully obvious that i need some type of jig.

Cheapest Bottom Bracket known to man. Thats ok because it just adds more to weld.

There was silver solder on there so i had to really grind it down and punch it through to avoid a reaction.

No problem because it helps line it up and provides a place for a tac out of the way.

Whats Hammerwing? well it dream of Nolan17 brought to life by Vicious Cycles. Nolan17 wanted to put a Hammerschmidt crank on his Vicious Fat bike, who dosent. 2 speeds tons of clearance whats not to want. Problem is the Hammerschmidt BB dosent com in 100mm which is the standard for fat bikes. So he did what any Fat tire revolutionary would do, he modified it. He had it cut and an insert welded in.

maverick 4" front end. Dropper post, stealth black and Jones bars make this one bad ass bike.

He brought me some of his extra files because i only had two. Thats my box i Tig welded together.

Original chrome rack painted purple. that will be the first item in the blaster. Sone kickstands because you can never have enough vintage kicks.

Dont know what i am going to do with the valve covers or peg but i am sure i will find something.
He also got me 4 bikes to cut up. More on them later.

Do it all Kids BMX bike

A while back i told you that i was shopping around for a BMX bike for my son. Thread Here

He expressed interest in BMX racing. Since we have Hunterdon county BMX race track 15 min from our house i was elated. Then to muddy the water we found out that Shields skatepark, only 10 min from my house lets BMX bikes use the place two days per week. Oh boy now we have a problem.

He saw the jump boxes and wants to ride them, but want to go real fast on the track.

My solution was to get him the best fitting bike that could do both.

Enter the Specialized 20" Hot Rock for $220

First thing first this is not a full on mini, but has a 17 inch top tube which most mini's have. It is made out of Aluminum and comes in at a respectable 23.5lbs stock. It has V brakes if we ever upgrade to a freewheel. 1 1/8 threadless stem so it can fit almost any fork and stem out there. 2.0 tires stock and room for bigger. As this bike sits it is fine for the Skate park. Everything on it is burly enough to handle and crash or goast rides. Is it a big air bike? nope, but it is small enough for him at 4 ft tall that he can handle it. On the other hand if we bought him a true mini he couldnt take it to the skate park, but he can take this bike to both places.

Room for big tires something a true mini does not have.

32oz or 2lb front fork. Stout enough to handle anything he is going to do, but only 1lb heavier than a Redline mini fork. maybe a future upgrade.

So in my quest to kill two birds with one bike i decided to upgrade his bike with the most noticeable upgrade there is tires. The Big tire to run on the Mini scene is the Intense Micro Knobby. So i ordered up the smallest pair i could get onto my rims, 20x1.5's they weighed in at 270g and 302g for a total of 572grams.

Here is a great pic of them next to the stock Specialized Rhythm Lite 2.0's weighing in at 520g and 530g for a total of 1050grams. So the total savings of the tire swap was 478g or just over a pound lost. Also the stock tires are rated at a max of 60 psi, but the new intense tires have a max of 110! now i doubt that i will ever inflate them to that pressure, but they are setting up at 60psi right now and boy does that bike roll easy now. I can easy get them to 80 psi which is double what the 2.0's got.

My journey into frame building begun with welding class last semester. Now I am into my second welding class and learning how to Tig weld. Lucky my teacher cut his teeth welding race car frames and motorcycles so He is in tune with what i am up to. I asked him if i could cut up a frame and have him teach me how to weld it back together. I figure why not learn on what i am going to be using when i am turned lose. Big Lou got me this 16" Huffy kids bike frame and fork from the garbage.

After giving it some thought i figured out where i wanted to cut it.

Then i cleaned it up for rewelding.

Some tubes are going to line up with little prep.

Others are going to take a little more work.

And some even more.

I know i have featured bigger and better projects here. This might seem pedestrian in comparison, but i have to start somewhere. I think i have shown that i can bolt together a bike pretty good. Now it is time to take it to take my builds to the next level.

A Secret Army of Turner Fat bikes

As the cycling world slept underground builders were constructing a small army of full suspension Turner Fat bikes. They first started to appear as early as 2006. Builders Stroganof, Tscheezy have combined different Turner Bikes front triangles and rear swingarms to fit massive 3.0-3.7 tires. They have created the first full suspension fat bikes since the 90's big hit bike craze. Lets take a look at this army of Franken Turners.

Fellow OG Fat Biker Tscheezy's bike first popped up in 2006. He used a gazzalodi 3.0 rear tire, but the minimum for a fat bike is 3.0 so he is in.

then he built another, and yet another.

Then he upped his game and became the first to add the Maverick Duc 32

At the time this fork and tire combo rubbed. We later found out that it was because of the 65mm rims were too wide. now if you use the new crop of 45-50mm fat rim the tires dont rub.

After Tscheezy showed what he was doing he fleshed out Stroganof who was also on the same page. Here is his creation. He took a different approach and opened up the steel rear triangle to accommodate the Surly Endomorph 3.7

this may be the first true full suspension fat bike to use the 3.7
Well about 5 years have passed and the notion of the all you need is the "cush" of the big tires has passed and along comes Dirtydoug.
DirtyDoug took it to a new level. He took a 2009 Turner Sultan 29er and had the rear triangle opened up to fit the new 3.7 Surly Larry.

The Full Suspension Fat Bike Revolution has started. If they dont build it we will.

It's that time of year again. Time for the North American Handmade Bicycle Show or NAHBS. Time for HD pics of high end custom bikes you cant afford and may never get made for the public, but we can always dream.

I cant see the name, but it is a 26" bike polo bike that breaks apart with an add on canvas disc cover.

It seems that this is the summer of extreme sports. My kids keep getting on my novelty monster skateboard and try to ride it with no avail. Having spent years on a half pipe myself back in the late 80's skating is in my blood. Now with Shields indoor skatepark 5 minutes away from my house i might as well turn them lose.
I went shopping for boards at local walmart and toys-r-us and found that starter boards go for $20.-$50. some of them even had some type of ABS plastic trucks, can you say epic fail.
Then i branched out to my local skate shops and found that Jr size boards now exist which is great. The down side is the decks are about $60. alone and complete boards are $90. and up. I am sure i could find a deal somewhere on the web and get it shipped to me, but sometimes it comes down to color to a kid. Plus i dont want to dump a ton of money into this until i know he is serious. Then if he is i have no problem with getting one of these Star Wars Skateboard decks.

I decided why dont i just swap out my big monster truck wheels and make my board more usable. This way he can ride it and see if he likes it first before i lay out any big money. Even if he dosent like it i will still ride it around the shop.
Made a list of things that had to go.
Wheels, risers and bolts.

I went to the Vans store and guess what they were having a sale so i hit the jack pot.

Bones "Rat Rod" wheels $15. Shortys bolts $10. and some SpitFire Cheap Shots bearings $10. I passed on trucks to save some money, so i thought. When i tried to put on the wheels i noticed that the novelty wheels used wider trucks with larger diameter axles. I went back to the Vans store and picked up the trucks i wanted to get all along.

Venture trucks $20. for the pair. of course the holes didnt line up so i had to drill them out.

I added some stickers i had laying around and we are all done, Pimped out.

Project total not counting 20 year old starting skateboard $55.00 Thats what the Kustom Kulture is all about my friends.

I was first introduced to this next builders work when i got the book, Cruisers by Jonny Fuego and Michael Ames. In the book on page 86 starts a feature on Eric Paulson. Several pages are dedicated to his bikes, most of which look like old school choppers without an engine.

My favorite at the time was his Pandora build. Homemade Girder fork, 3 inch wide Nokian Gazzalodi tires.

A year later on my Undergroundvelo Facebook i notice an Eric Paulson as one of my followers. It didnt click until a pic of one of his projects popped up on another facebook site without him letting it out. Since he was a long time follower and i was blown away by what i saw i contacted him about featuring this mind blowing build when he was ready and here it is.

Yes he used Surly 3.7 Endomorph tires. The fat biker in me approves.

He says he is not finished yet. I can only imagine that he is going to use that disc to stop this monster.

I have known TSCheesy from Mtbr.com for years now from the fat bike scene. He is an OG like me, but has been on fat bikes even longer. He brought us one of the most infamous gifs, "dead whale huck"

not quite that simple, but i am not above it(see yesterdays posts).
I like cool old stuff especially old bikes. last week the boys walked into an eclectic collectors house and walked into a bike gold mine. First Frank walks right up to a Shelby Donald bike. you only got to see the front of the bike so it was hard to see if it was a girls or boys, but here is a full shot of a boys from oldroads.com

If it was a boys and they passed it up they were crazy to do so if it was for sale. Here is one that just sold from copakeauctions.com for $4,620.

Then they stumble upon the Schwinn Autocycle that Mike buys. these pics are from his album on The CABE. it's members only so join up and go find him on there.

and the kicker is, the Autocycle was laying next to a Western Flyer... Sound familiar? That is the bike i used for Supernaut my Ratrodbikes.com build off winner. Go to the menu, it has it's own page i am working on.

So there you go. Bicycles are being saved by these guys and they are putting Danielle on TV so win,win.

Ok back to work. Here is how i got the fork for my Lillian bike build

i broke it down and cleaned it up.

next was to paint the orange a white primer. the black remained old and chipped.

i polished up the chrome and put it back together.

The Bikes are built on Basman frames. The electric motor is in the rear hub and the battery is in the tank. So clean and so ready to be customized. one of the unwritten rules of ratrodding is no paint, no chrome, no billet. well every now and then some slips through. Here is my Fender for Lillian found on the bottom of the page. I had to freshen up the white because when i mount the fender the Fresh white of the discs makes the fender look real bad. al least i used white primer.

the black and red will be left alone to match the rest of the bike.

There is a whole lot of Do It Yourself going on in the fat bike world. So sit back and enjoy the music selection and some of the arts and crafts.
First up i had a problem with snow coming over the top of my boots and getting inside. The solution is boot gators which run $30-$60. and usually go all the way up to your knee. They are traditionally used for hiking and snow shoeing. They dont have to worry about getting caught in a chain so they tend to be baggy. I went to my local EMS and found only super baggy expensive tall ones. I found only one short pair from EMI that would work fine, but before i spend $40. let me see what i can cobble up.

Into my bag of old cycling stuff that i never use and never throwaway, now i know why. i found these Hammer shin guards.

The neoprene was still good, but the rubber was dry rotted so it had to go.

They have to cover the top of the boot so they have to go over the boot. the only way to do this is to wear them upside down. when you do this you can only use half of the guard. Thats fine because thats all i need. Mid shin was the goal so i cut it right in the middle.

note to self use sharp scissors because neoprene cuts weird. remember it's like rubber so you have to point the scissors in the direction you want to finish.

Then i wrapped them around my boots covering up about two inches from the top.

My gators rest easy on my boots. the top of my boots is just above the arch and just below the straight seem.

I walked around and noticed that if put them on tight they slid up. If i put them on snug they didnt move up when i walked. So on to the exercise bike. After a few minutes they slid up. Real gators have hook on the front that attach to a ring that is built into the shoe that sits in front of the laces. and they have a stirrup. i noticed that in the front of my gator there was a double flap so i poked two holes in it for the laces and when i tie the shoe it holds the gator down, boom ghetto gators.
